My mother has been making these for Halloween treats for about 40 years. There are over 200 people that come every year to get one of her apples. There are adults as well kids. For many it is a tradition to stop at her house and get a red candy apple.
4 Tablespoons vinegar
2 1/2 cups water
red food coloring
2 drops cinnamon oil*
Cook to crack stage on a candy thermometer and add 2 drops cinnamon oil and dip apples. This recipe will make 25-30 med. apples. You may want to keep sauce over a low burner while dipping if it begins to get too thick while dipping your apples.
To prepare apples, wash and dry apples, insert sticks. Make sure apples are at room temperature before dipping.
*Cinnamon oil used to be available by all the other spices, but we now have to go to the drug counter and ask for it. It is a very strong oil that can burn if it get on your skin.
